Rachel Smalley mislead Kiwis through inaccurate reporting. The BSA has ruled that an opinion piece by Ms Smalley, on NewsTalkZB’s KPMG Early Edition, breached the standard of accuracy when she said Israeli had “killed every civilian inside”. Where other news channels reported 16 people were killed in the strike, Ms Smalley was suggesting that 3,300 people died. The BSA said this was a significant overstateement and, “While hosts are entitled to express their opinions in editorials within news and current affairs programmes, they must ensure that if they make factual statements … these are accurate so the audience is not misled.”
